๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and a Paadal Petra Sthalam in Mayiladuthurai district. The presiding deity is Swetharanyeswarar, with Brahmavidyambigai as the Goddess. The temple is especially renowned as the Budhan (Mercury) Navagraha Sthalam. It is also traditionally known as Aadhi Chidambaram and is associated with Lord Shiva's Ananda Tandava.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

According to the traditional sthala history, an asura named Maruthuvan obtained a powerful trident through penance to Shiva and began troubling the Devas. He attacked Nandi with the trident, causing injuries. Shiva manifested as Aghoramurthy, one of his fierce forms, and defeated the asura. The Aghoramurthy shrine is one of the major highlights of the temple. The temple is also associated with the three sacred water bodies known as Surya Theertham, Chandra Theertham and Agni Theertham. The temple's sthala vrikshas include Vada Vaal, Kondrai and Vilva.
