🔱 Temple Significance

Thirukattupalli Aranyeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple associated with the Tevaram tradition. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Aranyeswarar, also known as Aranyasundarar, and Goddess Parvati as Akilandeswari. The temple is traditionally associated with Sage Aranya and with Indra's worship of Shiva. It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery northern bank.

🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional history of the temple, the demon Viruthrasura obtained a boon from Brahma and began troubling the Devas. Indra fought and defeated him, but incurred a dosha as a result. On the advice of his Guru, Indra travelled to several sacred places seeking relief. At Thirukattupalli, he found Lord Shiva manifest as a swayambhu in the middle of a dense forest and worshipped Him. Shiva appeared before Indra and granted him relief, teaching that an act performed in the cause of justice does not incur the same sinful consequence. The name Aranyeswarar is traditionally connected with Aranya Rishi, who worshipped Shiva at this sacred forest shrine. The temple also has a distinctive Nandu Vinayagar (Crab Vinayagar) shrine, associated with a Gandharva who is said to have taken the form of a crab because of a curse. The temple's traditional temple tree is Panneer tree, and the sacred water is Amirtha Theertham. Major festivals include Maha Shivaratri, Kandha Sashti, Arudra Darshan and Vinayaka Chaturthi.
