🔱 Temple Significance

Thirumullaivasal Mullaivananathar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mullaivananathar, with Anikonda Kothai Amman as the Goddess. The temple is an important Tevaram shrine and is associated with Tirugnana Sambandar. The sacred tree of the temple is the Mullai creeper, and the temple has Brahma and Chandra Theerthams.

🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional temple legend, Chola king Killivalavan, the grandfather of Karikala Chola, suffered from a severe skin disease. He was advised to bathe in a sacred temple tank to seek relief. When the king and his entourage came to this region, the area was covered with Mullai creepers. The king's horse became entangled in the creepers. While cutting them with his sword, the king accidentally struck a self-manifested Shiva Lingam beneath them. Blood is said to have appeared from the Lingam. Shocked by what had happened, the king attempted to punish himself, but Lord Shiva appeared with Goddess Parvati and saved him. The traditional account associates this event with the name Thirumullaivasal. A mark believed to represent the sword wound is traditionally shown on the Lingam.
