๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple is associated with the ancient settlement of Kaveripoompattinam, an important port city of the Sangam period. The shrine was known as Pallavaneeswaram in earlier times. According to the traditional account, a Pallava ruler worshipped Shiva here, giving rise to the name Pallavaneeswaram and the name Pallavaneswarar for the presiding deity. The temple is believed to have existed before the 7th century, as it was praised by Tirugnana Sambandar. The temple also has historical inscriptions recording land donations. The inscriptions indicate that the area was known as Kaveripoompattinam within Nangoor Nadu. The temple is additionally associated with Pattinathar and Iyarpagai Nayanar, who are traditionally regarded as having been born at Poompuhar.
