Iluppaipattu Neelakandeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple associated with the Tevaram tradition. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Neelakandeswarar, while Goddess is worshipped as Amirthavalli. The temple is especially notable for its five Shiva Lingas associated with the Pandavas, each worshipped in a separate shrine. The temple is also associated with the legend of Goddess Parvati stopping the poison in Lord Shiva's throat, giving the Goddess the name Amirthavalli.

The ancient names of this sacred place are Pazhamannippadikkarai and Thirumannippadikkarai. According to temple tradition, during their exile, the Pandavas worshipped Shiva here. The five Shiva Lingas associated with them are Neelakandeswarar, Padikarainathar, Mahadeeswarar, Parameswarar and Mutheeswarar. The temple's sacred tree is the Iluppai (Mahua) tree, and the associated sacred waters include Brahma Theertham and Amirtha Theertham.
