๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Thirukkurakkukka Kundaleswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kundaleswarar (Kundalakarneswarar) and Goddess as Kundalanayaki (Kundalambikai). The temple is famous for its unique connection with Lord Hanuman, who is believed to have offered his ear ornament (Kundalam) to Lord Shiva after seeking forgiveness. A rare Shiva-bhakta Hanuman shrine facing the sanctum is one of the temple's distinctive features.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

According to temple tradition, after the Ramayana war, Hanuman returned with a Shiva Lingam for Rama's worship. When he saw that Rama had already worshipped a sand Lingam, he became distressed and sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness at this sacred place. Hanuman offered his ear ornament (Kundalam) to the Shiva Lingam, giving the deity the name Kundaleswarar. The temple also houses a self-manifested sand Lingam and is associated with miraculous worship by monkeys during the Tamil month of Chithirai.
