Ponnur Abathsahayeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple historically known as Thiru Anniyur. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Abathsahayeswarar and Goddess as Periyanayaki Amman. The temple is one of the Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalams on the northern bank of the Cauvery and is praised by Appar and Tirugnanasambandar. Traditional beliefs associate the temple with Surya, Varuna and Agni.

🏛 Temple History

The ancient name of Ponnur was Thiru Anniyur. The temple has a long association with the Tamil Shaiva tradition and is listed as the 22nd Shiva temple on the northern bank of the Cauvery praised in the Tevaram tradition. The temple complex contains shrines for Vinayaka, Murugan, Punugeeswarar, Periyanayaki and the Nayanmars, along with a Navagraha shrine. Varuna Theertham is associated with the temple.
