🔱 Temple Significance

Appakkudathan Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The deity appears in a reclining posture holding a pot of Appam, which symbolizes divine compassion and nourishment. Devotees believe that worshipping here removes hunger, poverty, and life difficulties and grants prosperity and peace.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is located at Tirupper Nagar near Tiruchirappalli on the banks of the sacred Kaveri River. According to legend, King Upamanyu suffered from hunger due to a sage’s curse. He prayed to Lord Vishnu, who appeared here holding a pot of sweet Appam and fed the king. Because of this divine act, the deity became known as Appakkudathan. The temple is praised in the hymns of Nammalvar and is an important pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites.
