πŸ”± Temple Significance

Thiruvellarai Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The presiding deity, Pundarikakshan Perumal, is worshipped in a standing posture. The temple is believed to be older than the Srirangam temple and holds immense spiritual importance. Devotees believe that worship here removes sins and grants prosperity, health, and peace.

πŸ› Temple History

The Pundarikakshan Perumal Temple at Thiruvellarai is one of the most ancient and spiritually significant temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Tamil Nadu. Believed to be over 2000 years old, this sacred shrine predates even the famous Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple, making it one of the earliest centers of Vaishnavite worship in South India. The temple stands majestically atop a small hill of white rock, which gives the place its name β€œThiruvellarai” (meaning β€œsacred white rock”). According to legend, the temple was originally established by King Sibi Chakravarthy, a ruler renowned for his righteousness and devotion. It is believed that he performed intense penance here to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord appeared in the form of Pundarikakshan, meaning β€œthe one with lotus-like eyes,” and chose to reside in this sacred place. Over time, the temple received patronage from various dynasties including the Pallavas, Cholas, and Vijayanagara rulers, each contributing to its expansion and architectural grandeur.
