🔱 Temple Significance

Swarnapureeswarar Temple at Sembanarkoil, historically known as Thiruchemponpalli, is an important Shaiva temple in the Cauvery delta region. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Swarnapureeswarar, while the Goddess is known as Maruvaar Kuzhali Ammai and Sugandha Kundalambikai. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and has been praised by Tirugnana Sambandar and Tirunavukkarasar.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is traditionally associated with Ko Chengannan Chola and the Chola-period temple-building tradition. The ancient name of the sacred site was Thiruchemponpalli. Architectural and inscriptional evidence indicates that the temple underwent reconstruction and additions during different periods of Chola rule. Inscriptions from later Chola rulers, including Rajadhiraja Chola and Kulothunga Chola III, record gifts and endowments connected with temple worship and maintenance. According to the sthala tradition, the temple is associated with several deities and sages who worshipped Shiva here, including Mahalakshmi, Indra, Murugan, Vishnu, Brahma, Agastya and Vasishta. The place is traditionally associated with the names Lakshmipuri, Indrapuri and Skandapuri because of these legends.
