Ponsei Natrunaiyappar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Ponsei village of Mayiladuthurai district. The presiding deity is Natrunaiyappar, while the Goddess is known as Parvathaputhri and Malaiyaan Madanthai. The temple is a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam, traditionally associated with the sacred hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar. The temple is also associated with the ancient name Thirunanipalli.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is traditionally associated with Thirunanipalli, an ancient sacred site connected with Tirugnana Sambandar. According to the traditional account, Sambandar's mother Bhagavathi Ammaiyar was born here. The temple tradition also connects the place with the well-known story of Sambandar receiving divine grace from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati during his childhood. The temple has Chola-period architectural features and is traditionally associated with Parantaka Chola I. The temple is described as dating to the 11th-century period, while its Tevaram association indicates the antiquity of the sacred site. The name Ponsei is traditionally explained through the belief that the land became prosperous and fertile, producing gold-like agricultural wealth. Over time, the name is said to have evolved into Punsei/Punjai. Another local tradition connects the name with Lord Ganesha worshipping here after a dosha associated with Agastya's sacred water vessel.
