Achalpuram Shivalokathyagar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Achalpuram, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. The temple is traditionally known as Thirunallur Perumanam and is associated with Tirugnanasambandar, one of the foremost Nayanmar saints of Tamil Shaivism.

🏛 Temple History

Achalpuram was historically known as Thirunallur Perumanam, while the temple was associated with names such as Shivalokapuram and Mukthipuram in traditional accounts. The shrine has a long history connected with the development of Tamil Shaiva worship in the Cauvery delta. The temple contains inscriptions belonging to several medieval rulers, including Vikrama Chola, Kulothunga Chola III, Rajadhiraja Chola II and Rajaraja Chola III, along with inscriptions associated with the Pandya ruler Maravarman Tribhuvana Chakravarti Parakrama Pandyan. These records provide evidence of land donations, temple administration, worship and other religious endowments. An inscription associated with the reign of Rajadhiraja Chola II also records a village-level administrative resolution concerning agricultural tenants, providing an interesting glimpse into the social and agrarian history of the Cauvery delta. The temple has subsequently undergone renovation and development, including additions to the mandapas and other parts of the complex.
