Sirkazhi Sattainathar Temple is one of the important ancient Shaiva temples of the Cauvery region. The temple complex is particularly notable because Shiva is worshipped in three principal forms: Brahmapureeswarar as the Shiva Lingam at the lower level, Thoniappar as Uma Maheswarar at the middle level, and Sattainathar, associated with Bhairava, at the upper level. 🏛 Temple History

The temple has a long history associated with the Chola region and the Tevaram tradition. The original sacred complex was subsequently enlarged during the reigns of Chola rulers including Kulothunga Chola I, Vikrama Chola, Kulothunga Chola II and Kulothunga Chola III. The temple features extensive prakarams and large gopurams characteristic of Dravidian temple architecture. According to temple tradition, during a great deluge, Shiva is believed to have protected the sacred arts on a divine boat, giving rise to the name Thoniappar and the sacred association of the place with Thonipuram. Brahma is also traditionally believed to have worshipped Shiva here, leading to the name Brahmapureeswarar.
