Thiruvavaduthurai Gomuktheeswarar Temple is an important ancient Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Cauvery. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Gomuktheeswarar, also known as Masilamaniswarar, while Goddess is worshipped as Oppilamulaiyammai. The temple is particularly associated with Saint Thirumoolar and is also the historic seat of Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam.

🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional sthala history, Goddess Parvati was cursed to be born as a cow. At Thiruvavaduthurai, the cow is believed to have worshipped the self-manifested Shiva Lingam by pouring milk over it. Lord Shiva blessed her and released her from the curse. Since the cow attained liberation here, Shiva came to be known as Gomuktheeswarar. The temple is also closely associated with Saint Thirumoolar, whose samadhi is traditionally located in the outer prakaram. The temple is administered by Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam, an important Saiva institution.
