๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Therazhundur Vedapureeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. The presiding deity is Vedapureeswarar, with Soundaraambigai as the Goddess. The temple is associated with the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnanasambandar and is traditionally counted among the Shiva temples on the southern bank of the Cauvery.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple's historical name is Tiruvazhundur. Tradition states that the Devas, the Ashtadikpalakas and the Vedas worshipped Lord Shiva here, giving rise to the name Vedapureeswarar. The temple is also traditionally regarded as one of the 78 Maadakkoils associated with Kochengat Chola. The name Therazhundur is associated with a traditional story in which the chariot of King Urdhvaradan became stuck or sank at this place. The temple also has inscriptions attributed to the Imperial Chola period; the Archaeological Survey of India has documented 12th-century Tamil inscriptions associated with Kulothunga Chola I. The temple is also connected with the sacred traditions of Agastya, Markandeya and the river Cauvery.
